The death of George Floyd in the hands of white law enforcers and the racist encounter between Amy Cooper and Christian Cooper in the USA highlighted the need for a robust re-engagement with the question of race, class and gender. Internalized discrimination and institutionalized racism are also challenges that are embedded in the South African social fabric. In the country where everyday life is characterized by inequality, poverty and unemployment, the role of museums in promoting social cohesion is becoming increasingly relevant.  

In this panel, cultural professionals, researchers, academics and activists from various fields reflect on the question of internalized discrimination and institutionalized inequality – How do we tackle these challenges and how do we promote social cohesion?
