ABOUT

It’s been said by a number of adult adoptees that adoption is layered and complicated. What does this mean for us as parents? Not everything is adoption related but not everything isn’t. We often speak about the obvious trauma of grief and loss that occurs at the point of separation from first family. Research shows that adopted people/ adoptees share that while this is true, when adoptive parents aren't consciously engaging with the fullness of who they are which includes navigating what it means to be adopted, (same race as well as transracial/ cross cultural)positively affirming hair and skin needs as well as enabling children to bridge into their ethnic communities of origin, this is leads to a secondary trauma experience.

As parents or prospective parents, what are the practical skills and considerations we need to implement with conscious intent and deliberate action in order to see our children thrive.

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Cultural Sensitivity such as language use & power of words
  • Hair & Skin care
  • Identity formation
  • Trauma-Informed Parenting
  • Support networks

This workshop will be hosted by Arise in collaboration with Thandeka Kuo who will share her current research and perspectives on what felt safety includes for adoptees.
