ABOUT

Cape Town Together OZCAN:

South Africans Across the Globe Unite!

The Overview

We believe community is the new currency; South Africans for South Africa. We are Oranjezicht CAN (Community Action Network), a suburb in Cape Town that has partnered with BKSP CAN in Athlone, the Cape Flats area. We provide food and hygiene essentials to people who normally live hand-to-mouth, and now have no hope of supporting themselves due to Covid-19 and the SA lockdown.

We’re asking you for help. If every South African living abroad, as well as many locals, or anyone who has ever travelled to South Africa and has been touched by her beauty, donated just ZAR20 / 1USD / 1EURO, we would have enough funding to not only cover the needs of our partner beneficiaries in the coming weeks and months, but we’d be able to expand our reach and share funding with other organisations, CANs and communities to help them through this difficult time as well.

About the Movement

Cape Town Together is a community response to COVID-19, which started in Cape Town and is fast spreading across the Western Cape. There are currently 129 CANs operating in the Western Cape region and this model is now being adopted by other cities in South Africa too

Under the Cape Town Together umbrella, individual suburbs started forming Community Action Networks (CANs), in order to mobilize resources and help bridge the gap between government response to the South African lockdown and many communities who are grosely food insecure without any means of income. Suburbs with more resources partner with suburbs and communities who are disadvantaged and under resourced, to provide food, basic essentials, education and general support during this historic time.

Oranjezicht CAN and Our Partners

We are Oranjezicht CAN (OZCAN), a suburb in Cape Town central, who have partnered with BKSP CAN in Athlone, the Cape Flats area. BKSP CAN covers 5 different suburbs within that broader area, namely Bridgetown, Kewtown, Silvertown, Parktown and Vygieskraal informal settlement. We help to provide food and hygiene essentials to people who normally live hand-to-mouth and now have no hope of supporting themselves due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

We also support the local homeless shelters within the CBD of Cape Town.

Community is the New Currency

I have been absolutely blown away by people’s generosity and their willingness to help during this time. It's an amazing feeling to be engaged with a group of individuals from so many walks of life, from different socio-economic backgrounds and different levels of education, who are coming together, sharing knowledge, resources and funding so openly without any resistance. It's a testament to how the world could and should operate - society being driven not by economic gain, but by purpose and the common good of all.

South Africans for South Africa

If every South African living abroad, as well as many locals, or anyone who has ever traveled to South Africa and has been touched by her beauty, donated just 20ZAR / 1USD / 1EURO, we would have enough funding to not only cover the needs of our partner beneficiaries in the coming weeks and months, but we’d be able to expand our reach and share funding with many other organisations, CANs and communities to help them through this time as well.

According to a Wikipedia entry looking at official Census data from around the world, there are 600,000 South African born people living abroad. That's 12 million rand, which would help us extend a much needed lifeline to our poorest of people.

My promise to You

We have a good idea of how much food and essentials our partners need each week, so as donations start rolling in, we will provision the amount of funding needed to cover these supplies for a four month period and then start allocating funding to other organisations, CANs and communities who need it the most.

To all our wonderful donors THANK YOU - your contribution really will change people's lives today.

Stay safe, stay clean and stay separate, yet together.

Sincerely,

Victoria Putter
