Le Monde Du Clavecin - harpsichord solo recital

Wed Apr 9, 19:00 - Wed Apr 9, 20:30

St Andrew's Presbyterian Church

ABOUT

John Reid Coulter is one of South Africa’s foremost authorities on historical keyboard instruments and one of our finest harpsichord players.  On 9 April he will present a recital which promises to transport us into the wonderful world of powdered wigs and beauty spots with some 17th and 18th century repertoire for solo harpsichord. He will play a rich variety of works by the Couperin family, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Jacques Duphly, Louis Marchant and Claude Balbastre, whose works range from expressive free-from preludes to quirky social commentary pieces, offering us glimpses into the sophisticated humour and progressives tastes at the French court. We will also sojourn into the Iberian Peninsula for works by seldom-heard Portuguese and Spanish composers Carlos Seixas, João de Sousa Carvalhos and Antonio Soler, as well as works by Domenico Scarlatti, who was employed at the Spanish court.

The concert will be narrated by Anna Stoddard, well-known presenter of ‘Anna’s Baroque BonBons’ on Fine Music Radio.

Complementary wine will be served during the interval.
