ABOUT

Arise is hosting a 3 week series focusing on Openhearted Adoption in partnership with two adult adoptees, Angela Tucker and Sara-Jayne King.

Openness in Adoption is often thought to reference the nature of contact between Adoptees and their Biological Families but it is about more than just this. Openness references the attitude and way in which families engage with all aspects of adoption: How we talk about adoption, to children as well as outside of our home; how we engage with the fullness of who our children are (their race, roots and traits which may well reflect their biological families such as a particular interest or aptitude) and how we create space to engage with this.

Angela Tucker from www.theadoptedlife.com is known as a change agent in the field of adoption in the USA and is an advocate for openness in adoption. She facilitates conversations, dialogues and as well as consults to script writers with regards to transracial adoptions. Angela is involved in mentoring adoptees, supporting families as well as assisting and advocating for the release of information to adoptees, which was requested but never received. South Africans might recognise Angela from her Red Table Talk discussion with Jada Pinkett-Smith and if you are a This Is Us fan, Angela has consulted to the script development too!

Sara-Jayne King is a South African/British author and broadcaster whose career spans over 15 years and four continents. She has an LL.B degree and a Master’s in Journalism. Sara-Jayne hosts her own daily radio show on Cape Talk. Killing Karoline is Sara-Jayne's autobiography and is a South African best-seller that has been read and used in international adoption groups to discuss adoption, identity and race. Sara-Jayne is passionate about issues relating to race, identity, adoption, addiction and mental health.

1.Openness in Adoption with Angela Tucker - Thursday 2 July

Let's dive into a discussion around the spectrum of openness vs contact and what this means for the adoption constellation. Angela Tucker, who is about to release her book, The Adoptee Next Door, is going to elaborate on this from the US for us. It's a topic that comes up often in different online platforms. Let's understand the theory as well as explore what this means as families formed through adoption.

2.In Conversation with Sara-Jayne King + Angela Tucker - Thursday 9 July

A panel discussion between Sara-Jayne King and Angela Tucker exploring what openness has meant for them and why it matters.

3.Let's Get Practical: Life Story Work - Thursday 16 July

How do we develop openness from Day 1 or going forward from where you are today? Join us as we look practically at what life story work entails as well as ideas for how to make this work.
