The World Health Organisation indicates that mental health will be the biggest crisis we will face on the planet by 2030. In a recent report by the Mental State of the World, South Africa scored the lowest average on mental health well-being among 34 countries worldwide. The data comes as no surprise, but how can we empower our communities to prioritise their mental well-being and find support?
During Mental Wellness Month in October, UPside is hosting a seminar on Saturday, 7 October, on the state of South Africa's mental health and its impact on NGOs, education and the economy with:
- Prof Mario Smith, Psychologist and Professor at UWC.
- Prof Daniel Louw. Professor in Theology and Pastoral Care at the University of Stellenbosch and
- Anelia Coetzee, People and Strategy Development Expert
The seminar will address questions such as:
- Is the mental health situation in SA really that bad?
- What is the cultural/cross-cultural impact on this conversation?
- Are community leaders and those working in the NGO space equipped to deal with mental health challenges?
- What can be done to promote improved relationships across the various bodies involved in mental healthcare?
- What can small businesses or NGOs that don’t have an HR department and an EWP do to help their staff? and those that they are helping ie NGOs
There will also be time for audience questions and networking with other attendees.

ANELIA COETZEE
| Anelia Coetzee is a People and Strategy Development expert with almost 40 years of collective experience in the NGO, government and private sectors. She holds a Masters in Business Administration (UCT, 2005) and in Urban and Regional Planning (UFS: 2009) with accomplishments in Change Management, People Development, Strategy Development and Project Management. Some of her career highlights include the strategic development and management of over 100 community learning centres, reaching 26,000 adult learners and improving the average pass rate by 10%. In addition, she has initiated and maintained several cross-sector partnerships to increase the resource pool for basic education in the Western Cape. |
DANIËL LOUW
| Professor in Theology and Pastoral Care, Daniël Louw has a special field of interest and research in pastoral care and counselling, pastoral anthropology and human dignity, hospital care, marriage and family enrichment, theodicy, theopaschitic theology and the human quest for meaning in suffering. He is the author of several significant books with published articles in globally accredited journals and publications. His insight at the Mental Health seminar on 7 October will be invaluable in highlighting the state of our nation's mental wellness. |
MARIO SMITH
Prof Smith has a PhD in clinical psychology, and his research interests include research capacity development, research methodology, statistical analysis, and the development of academics.
We look forward to his expert insight into the relationship between occupational stress and emotional intelligence, especially among health profession academics.
