ABOUT

Delheim celebrates a decade of guided mushroom foraging

Book now for a pro-workshop & mushroom hunt, fungi feast and some Wild Ferment

16 June and 3 July

It has been 10 years since Delheim first began spreading the love of wild mushrooms, making it a pioneer in the region when it opened its forests to organised forages. The renowned estate in SA’s wine heartland of Stellenbosch, now continues to lead the tradition having announced the 2020 dates for its popular ‘wild hunts’ - 16 June and 3 July.

The wild hunts were started in 2007 by Delheim’s Nora Thiel. “In those years, people were even less familiar with mushroom foraging than today,” she says. She showed a few people how it’s done and the idea for organised forages was born. “It took three years before we could get enough people together as interest grew,” Nora recalls.

Cape Town mushroom specialist Gary Goldman returns to share his knowledge of the fascinating fungus and its health properties. Gary has been part of the experience since 2013 and has just assisted with publishing, “A Field Guide to Mushrooms & Other Fungi of South Africa”, which will be available for sale during the mushroom season at Delheim.

Before leading foragers into the woods, Gary will teach you what’s edible, what should be avoided and how to forage in an eco-conscious way.

With baskets full, you’ll return to the winery’s Garden Restaurant for a sumptuous mushroom-inspired feast, fit for avid foragers and crowned with servings of the 2019 Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment - the latest vintage release of this wine.

Made in one of the most natural processes – by allowing spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeast - this wine has long been the calling card for Delheim’s eco-focus. It is also the perfect lunch partner to highlight the environmental approach used on this family-owned farm on the slopes of the Simonsberg.

As a WWF-SA Conservation Champion, Delheim is acknowledged as an industry leader for its commitment to conservation, responsible production practices and integrated environmental management systems. It is also a founder member of the Greater Simonsberg Conservancy under Cape Nature's stewardship programme, actively participating in protection and conservation through sustainable practice.

Among its initiatives, Delheim uses a bio-natural water management plant that recycles all cellar waste-water on the farm; takes care to preserve substantial tracts of mountain fynbos; and, promotes bio-diversity. Cape Mountain Leopards are regularly visiting the Delheim property and inspired future conservation on the Simonsberg.

It is in this magnificent landscape that foragers will venture to search for Mother Nature’s elusive delicacies.
