ABOUT

Wildlife marathon is annually organized on the last Sunday before 3rd march. This is because the marathon event is used as a curtain raiser event for the celebrations of international wildlife day of 3rd March. Therefore, this year’s marathon shall be organized on Sunday 23rd February 2020.

Uganda Museum shall be venue for the 2020 Wildlife marathon. All running routes shall start and end at the Uganda museum in Kitante.


Running Cause for the 2019 5th edition:

This year, participants will be running “To support children of fallen rangers access education” Over 26 Rangers have lost their lives while protecting wildlife against poachers and other bad elements, these have left over 135 dependants who deserve to be supported with their education carriers so as to get a brighter future. This marathon is therefore focused at mobilizing resources which can help purchase scholastic materials and contribute school fees to children of these wildlife conservation heroes.


CONCEPT

CONCEPT FOR THE FIFTH EDITION OF UGANDA WILDLIFE MARATHON 2020
 
 
Introduction
Uganda Wildlife Marathon is an annual sports event organized by Uganda Wildlife Authority on behalf of Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities to commemorate the International Wildlife Day. This activity is among a series of the annually organized activities aimed at mobilizing citizens to celebrate this day.
Wildlife marathon started in 2016 with a simple 5km run in Entebbe and later kept on growing to now 42km of running distance. Over the previous editions, proceeds from the marathon collections have always been channeled to supporting children of fallen rangers’ access education.
This year’s fifth edition of wildlife marathon is targeting to register over 3000 participants in the various running categories.
Nature of the marathon
The Wildlife marathon is a competitive and professional athletics event organized based on regulations and standards set by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF). At this event, winners are given awards while the top 50 athletes have their running times recorded by the timing officials.
Objectives
Wildlife marathon is organized to achieve the following objectives;-
  • To promote physical wellness through exercise to the public.
  • To promote awareness on wildlife conservation to the public.
  • To mobilize resources that shall support “children of fallen rangers” access education.
  • Mobilize the public through running to celebrate the international wildlife day.

    Venue and date

    Marathon activities
    At each edition, the following activities are organized:-
    Pre-event
  • Designing the route
  • Routes for 2020 edition are developed and released a month before the marathon event. These include all distances organized, places of water points and medical deployments along the route.
    Distances and routes
    Participants shall have options of running 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km. The 5km distance / route shall also be referred to as a family run route.
  • Registration of participants
  • Registration shall be conducted at gazzetted centers. Amongst these include: - Ministry of tourism, wildlife and antiquities at Rwenzori towers, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda museum, Wildlife Clubs of Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Education Center as primary registration centers. Participants can also register online using this link https://qkt.io/UgandaWildlifeMarathon. Other secondary registration centers shall be communicated later.
    Kits shall be ready for distribution at the registration centers a month before the marathon date.
    Registration at the centers shall open a month before the marathon date.
    Registration cost; Participants shall be required to register with the following costs;-
  • Corporate institution
  • 1,000,000/=
  • 25 Participants (Each to get a running vest, and bib number)
  • A tent (2 tables, 20 chairs, - Own branding and decorations)
  • 3 Polo shirts
  • Branded Certificate
  • Opportunity to brand at the venue (Next to own tent)
  • Recognitions and mentions at the event
  • Individual

  • Marathon kits (Vests)
  • Participation vests shall be designed in a fashion similar to the one of 2019 (Green and yellow colors). These shall be made in various sizes and only sponsors of the marathon can have their logos or brand on the kit. There shall also be kit sizes for the young children.
  • The event organizing team, participating institutions and service providers shall all do venue setup the evening before marathon day. This will help reduce on time wasted on the marathon day.
  • Event layout and prior setup
  • During marathon event
  • Flag off participants in sequence of distances.
  • Conduct aerobic stretches / exercise.
  • There shall be early deployments (Technical, medical, media and security).
  • Participants running various distances shall be flagged off at the following starting times;-
  • 5km shall be flagged off at 7:30am
  • 10km shall be flagged off at 7:25am
  • 21km shall be flagged off at 7:15am
  • 42km shall be flagged off at exactly 7:00am
  • Note: Flag off time shall be prompt and no delays will be considered.
  • Scoring for incoming athletes / participants.
  • Technical officials from the Uganda Athletics Federation shall be hired to support with scoring participants. Screen timing shall be used as big screens shall be displayed at the finish and start points as participants shall be timing themselves. However, the technical team will also hand time the first 50 participants for each category.
     
  • Awarding ceremony with very minimal speeches.
  • All winners shall be given awards according to their registration categories.
    The first three in each category shall receive the following
  • Gifts / cash or complementaries
  • Handshake
  • A medal
  • Entertainment
  • This shall be provided on both the venue and the routes.
