ABOUT

Calling on all disciples of pure enjoyment! Gather around as Roots Up, in partnership with Red Bull Music, are happy to present Sunday School V. The 1-year anniversary of the series sees us move our mass celebrations to a new home at The Bond Shed. Sunday School V looks to extend the summer heat into the fast approaching winter with SoKool, JuicetheGiant, Celestial Mic, ASVNTE, Umaah, and Mx Blouse leading us in good times. Stand up comedian and radio personality, Leah Jazz will be your MC.

Headlining the festivities will be MX Blouse, a performing and recording artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Having spent the last three years putting out their genre bending sound of rap, kwaito, electronic and dance influences. Mx Blouse has already played at some of South Africa’s most popular music festivals such as OppiKoppi and Smoking Dragon. They continue to carve out a niche in the market with their unique take on the 90s kwaito genre, having recently dropped No Match (produced by Thor Rixon and Albany Lore) and have been featured on tracks such Khahlela by Thor Rixon, Ready Or Not, by Three Witches and Dread Ringer from Parabyl & Tzara.

Sunday School V will see the return of Durban’s own Umaah, hot of the release of her first EP SHEILA released last year on Johannesburg based Indie Record label Subterranean Wavelength. Her compelling range as a live performer has had her perform on variety of coveted stages including Splashy Fen, Awesome Africa, Smoking Dragon, Moshito Beat, Interpret Durban and a series of live performances in New York City. Umaah’s collaborations as a recording artist have been equally eclectic with acts such as fellow Durbanite indie artist Moonchild Sanelly, Ian Kamau (Canada), Young Nations(US) , Faka (Italy) and Micr.Pluto adorning her list of past collaborators.

The local flavours build upon Sunday School’s reputation as one best Sunday programs that the city has to offer. The event will be kicked off by one of Durban’s best beat-men JuicetheGiant, the producer that continuously the rocks dance floors with his golden-era hip-hop influenced beats and live finger-drumming. He will be joined by one of Durban’s hottest party rockers, Sokool. Appearing at Sunday School for a second time, Sokool has been burning up dance floors across the country with sets featuring the hottest Hip-Hop, Dance Hall, Gqom and local heat. Producer/ DJ ASVNTE also finds himself on the line up after holding it down big time at various events and venues across the city. SSV will continue to feature Durban’s burgeoning live talent with a performance from Celestial Mic. The rapper meets singer meets producer meets poet has been ploughing his trade in the city for a while now , resulting in the release of the Hand of God EP last year.
