ABOUT

From their first EP, “Mother” (2006), Lo-ghost have been bending the pop genre to their will.

Comprised of Cape Town musicians and producers Shannon Devy and Evan Strauss, their work is characterised by a fearless, emotive handling of difficult aspects of the human condition, from the Queer experience to grief and loneliness, all rendered in the band’s characteristic gut-punch lyricism, massive vocals, rich rhythmic sensibility and lush sonics.

Their ability to connect quickly and indelibly with an audience has earned them a devoted cult following in their hometown and across the world.

In 2019, Lo-ghost released their second album, ‘CULT POP’, through Cape Town label KuduKudu Records. After the lush, dark alt-pop of 2016’s ‘There’s Blood In My Body and It Sounds Like This:’, ‘CULT POP’ saw Lo-ghost settled into a singular sound that is uniquely their own – a restless, genre-agnostic, groove-heavy sonic language from which the album draws its name.

The album brought them both regular national radio rotation and critical acclaim, with “The Ground Beneath Our Feet” named one of Apple Music’s Top 100 Songs of 2019. ‘CULT POP’ was awarded the SAMA for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2020 South African Music Awards.

“Night Speak” (2021, Platoon) marked the third full-length album from the duo. Written over the course of the long pandemic year, the album reaches backwards and forwards through time, deeply infused with a personal history captured in sound. Embedded throughout the songs are a number of field recordings from significant moments in the band’s personal and collective history, including a recording of the pall bearer briefing at Devy’s father’s funeral, night sounds from the alley behind the restaurant where Devy and Strauss worked together and met for the first time, and the sound of rain on the roof of the house where they made their first album. The result is a deeply personal offering – a love letter to the lost and found, and to one another.
