ABOUT
Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of Britain's most famous composers and his most well known work is probably the soaring The Lark Ascending. In 2021 it was voted the UK's most popular piece of classical music for the 11th year in a row! It is a stunning and emotional piece originally written for violin and piano, and later on transcribed for violin and orchestra. Zanta Hofmeyr will be bringing this exquisite piece of music to life together with Eugene Joubert, and it will be at the heart of the concert on Saturday. It will be paired with two other compositions by Vaughan Williams.
The Vagabond is Vaughan Williams' most famous song cycle, written for baritone and piano. We are however going to spice things up a bit, and share the pieces in the cycle amongst two baritones and two tenors. The other cycle, On Wenlock Edge, is composed for piano quintet, and again we will share all the pieces of the cycle between two baritones and two tenors, even though this was originally composed only for tenor. On Wenlock Edge is an absolutely gorgeous cycle where the composer really uses all the instruments available to paint a vivid musical masterpiece.
