Family Preservation in the South African Context: how to work with families in crisis

Wed Aug 30, 09:30 - Wed Aug 30, 12:30

Event is online

ABOUT

Family preservation and reunification services are designed to support families in crisis in which children are either at imminent risk of placement or have been placed outside of their homes. Thinking about the South African context, how do we keep children within their families when systems are failing not only the children but caregivers too. How do we keep families together and protect children for their future and stop generational trauma?

In this workshop, we will explore:

  • The meaning of family preservation in the context of the South Africa
  • Looking at the national policy of families, children's act, the constitution & white paper of social welfare as a framework
  • Family assessments tools
  • How to prevent the unnecessary removal of children
  • The various interventions for family preservation
  • Arise's model of family strengthening

The workshop will be interactive with an opportunity to practice some of the skills learnt while doing case studies and discussions.

This event is aimed for any professionals working with vulnerable children or families.

Certificates of attendance & SACSSP CPD applied for.
