Slow Art Day 2022 - MUST ART be pleasing to look at for it to be ART?

Sat Apr 2, 11:00 - Sat Apr 2, 15:00

Artichoke Gallery @ MelonRouge Eatery, Art, Antiques

ABOUT

Join us in Magaliesburg, South Africa, as part of the international Slow Art day, to have a look at the question –

MUST ART be pleasing to look at for it to be ART?

Furthermore - would you buy a hideous item or hang it in your house or office?

Is some art just made for museums or to make a statement but you don't want to get "involved" with the art piece.

On 2 April 2022 at 11h00 we will have a SLOW look at 2 pieces of art at Artichoke Gallery with a short discussion on each piece of art.

At 12h00 we will have a light lunch and informal conversation about the subject.

"What motivates me in art is the ugly and beautiful nature of the truth. It has to be truthful and honest, even if it is ugly and grotesque." Corin Nemec

“Art is not, as the metaphysicians say, the manifestation of some mysterious idea of beauty or God; it is not, as the aesthetical physiologists say, a game in which man lets off his excess of stored-up energy; it is not the expression of man’s emotions by external signs; it is not the production of pleasing objects; and, above all, it is not pleasure; but it is a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings, and indispensable for the life and progress toward well-being of individuals and of humanity.” Leo Tolstoy

"Fashion: a beautiful thing that becomes ugly. Art: an ugly thing that becomes beautiful." Coco Chanel

"There is nothing ugly in art except that which is without character, that is to say, that which offers no outer or inner truth." Auguste Rodin
