'Coastal Deep Ecology'

Human and 'other-than-human'

interaction and interbeing

on our marine coastlines in these turning times

Because of the economic benefits that accrue from access to ocean navigation, coastal fisheries, tourism and recreation, human settlements are often more concentrated in the coastal zone than elsewhere. Presently about 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. As population density and economic activity in the coastal zone increases, pressures on coastal ecosystems increase. Among the most important pressures are habitat conversion, land cover change, pollutant loads, and introduction of invasive species...

As residents of these coastal areas in the Western Cape in South Africa, we will gather to watch this documentary together and to discuss our human interbeing and interaction with the Coast.

This event will include a conversation with Kelson da Cruz about the conservation and regeneration work his organisation SEG (Scarborough Environmental Group) is pioneering in the village, the reading of a poem by local author Anna Kent, a discussion and a Work That Reconnects practice on our relationship with the Coast, with Mike Schlebach (Protect the West Coast), Roushanna Gray (Veld & Sea), Kelson da Cruz (SEG), Rachael Millson and Joanna Tomkins (Gaia Speaking).
