ABOUT

Fresh from her selection as one of the Top 5 finalists of this year’s espYoungLegends, the powerhouse vocalist Asanda Mqiki has announced dates to tour Cape Town.  Slow Life and other venues will host Mqiki and her band from 30 November to 3 December.
Hailing from Port Elizabeth, like other SA music legends before her – think Feya Faku and Zolani Mahola - Asanda Mqiki comes from the strong choral tradition of the Eastern Cape, and her signature musical style brings together jazz, funk and soul, with influences from R&B to Kwaito. She has been described as “a true Afro-Soul revelation" and will treat audiences to her repertoire of original South African jazz.

Some of Asanda's recent highlight shows include headlining the Cape Town Festival with Vicky Sampson and Jimmy Nevis, performing at the National Arts Festival, and playing for the first time with her full band at the Orbit in Johannesburg, to a standing ovation. Online culture magazine, Texx & the City, after seeing her at Oppikoppi 2016, said: Emotive and sassy, exuding a jazzy persona unlike anything I’ve seen, she was my best vocal performance of the weekend”.  Her “Vocal Explosion” jazz collaboration with Maya Spector played to capacity houses at the Market Theatre and the Cape Town Fringe festival.

Before she went solo in 2013, Asanda performed regularly with platinum-selling a cappella group The Soil, and is especially known for her collaboration on the song “Lizzy”.?  She was lead vocalist for the band Take Note, with whom she released two albums and performed at top SA festival Joy of Jazz.  Asanda has shared the stage and collaborated with artists such as the legendary Sibongile Khumalo, Freshlyground, The Soil, Khaya Mahlangu, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Putuma Tiso & Berita.

Asanda will be performing with her quartet, Thoba Goba on drums, Grant Allison on bass and Mthokozisi Mabuza on keys.

Slow Life and the Olympia Baker host Asanda Sunday 3 December at 7pm
