Immediately following their third trip to the BBC Proms with Classical Movements, from August 8-19, the pioneering Minnesota Orchestra and Music Director Osmo Vänskä will embark on a five-concert tour to Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg—the first-ever visit by a professional U.S. orchestra to South Africa—in partnership with our world-wide celebrations of the Nelson Mandela centenary.
In addition to repertoire honoring Leonard Bernstein's own centennial, Minnesota's Grammy-winning renditions of Beethoven and Sibelius, as well as a variety of popular African songs arranged for orchestra and choir in local languages such as Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho, maestro Vänskä will conduct the South African premiere of a work specially commissioned by Classical Movements' Eric Daniel Helms New Music Program: internationally lauded composer Dr. Bongani Ndodana-Breen's setting of Madiba's own words, titled Harmonia Ubuntu, starring soprano Goitsemang Lehobye.
