Two Oceans Aquarium

ABOUT

On 31 July 2013, the Two Oceans Aquarium will host a very special night of inspiration and motivation. It is going to be all about single-use plastic and the amazing people who are doing something about it. After a full month of awareness-raising for Plastic Free July, this will be the ideal time for all of us to come together and engage with the issue of and solutions to plastic pollution in the ocean - driven by passionate people we are proud to call friends.

Our speakers have been invited from various sectors – beach cleanups, recycling, up-cycling – and will share their expertise and passion on stage at the I&J Ocean Exhibit. The event will take the form of individual presentations followed by a panel discussion and will cover sectors like education, community, corporate, sports, and more.
  • How does what we do in our homes affect the health of the ocean, and that of the planet?
  • How can beach cleanups move communities to take care of their environment?
  • How can economic incentives jumpstart better-engaged informal recycling efforts?
  • How can we drive change amongst consumers?
  • How is the corporate world responding to the crisis of plastic pulltion?
  • Can we green our footprint when it comes to large sporting events?
  • What moves ordinary citizens to start up their own campaigns?
These questions and more will be explored at the Two Oceans Aquarium on 31 July 2018 – if you want to learn more about the complexities of plastic, find out what’s happening in Cape Town and surrounds to stem the tide of plastic entering the ocean, and network with like-minded souls who are on a mission to contribute to a better world, then don’t miss out on this one of a kind experience.

  • WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) manager Pavitray Pillay is involved in consumer awareness, education, outreach and public engagement on sustainable seafood and marine conservation.
  • Lisa Beasley and Aaniyah Omerdien met and became involved with The Beach Co-op through their mutual love for the ocean, and specifically Cape Town’s Tidal Pool Project. They initially joined forces to aid the City to find healthier protocols to ensure that our tidal pools are safe for people and marine animals alike. Whether teaching, freediving, cleaning beaches or introducing kids to our rich marine life, she is dedicated to helping people deepen their connection with nature and our oceans.
  • Mandy Naudé is the CEO of the Polyolefin Recycling Company (POLYCO). Mandy comes from a corporate environment, with her 30-year career spanning marketing, export sales, supply chain and business management positions. She is a wife and proud mother of three beautiful daughters. She is passionate about the environment and making a positive difference in all that she does.
  • Robyn Smith, the founder of Faithful to Nature, is passionately pioneering ethical consumerism on our planet. Her business puts transparency first as it sets to inform and enable its consumers to make more conscious buying choices across a multitude of categories and ethical parameters, with plastic-free shopping top of that list.
  • Blake Dyason, the founder of Love Our Trails, is an outdoor enthusiast and proudly South African. He leads by example, believing we all have a responsibility to make a positive difference in the world around us. In 2011 Blake dedicated his health, vitality and mobility to inspiring others and driving positive human behaviour change. Blake has raised millions for charities around the country and is involved in a number of projects and organisations to make the world we live in a better place.
  • Kim Walker is a professional sports and outdoor communication consultant. She's been running for nine years, and during this time learned more about the crisis that single-use plastic presents to life on Earth. The road running culture is one of enormous waste. For the past few years, Kim has worked with a group of committed individuals to create change in this arena, from reducing litter to working on ways to replace the plastic sachet at road running events across South Africa.
  • Plantastic’s tagline is: "Where the world leaves trash, we find treasure!" They make bangles and backpacks from plastic bags that they pick up in streets, oceans or from beaches – and call them Plantangles. A Plantangle's value lies simply in its presence - it is tangible and wearable proof that this piece of plastic is no longer out there!
  • As Environmental Campaigner at the Two Oceans Aquarium, human behaviour is Hayley McLellan's newfound inspiration. She seeks a variety of audiences to share her campaigning enthusiasm with, trusting that humans essentially want to do right by the planet. The vision of a plastic shopping bag free South Africa is currently her life’s work.
