CAPE TOWN LEARNERS WIN BY PROGRAMMING ROBOTS AND SOLVING A SPACE TRAVEL CHALLENGE

Learners of the German International School Cape Town (DSK) win first prize at the National Robotics Competition and are off to Detroit (US) to represent South Africa in April 2019.

After achieving fifth place in 2017, third place in 2018 and, Team ASAP from the German International School Cape Town (DSK) finally bagged the big win on December 01 2018 at the National First Lego League (FLL) Competition in Johannesburg.

The FLL is a worldwide themed program that helps learners develop practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (“STEM”) skills through a hands-on competition. In South Africa this year, at total of 135 provincial teams entered, 31 of which qualified for the National Championships.

The four components of the competition are: Robot Design, Robot Game, Core Values and Project. Jens Zundel (German International School Cape Town, Head of Department, Physics) commented, “According to research, Physics and Mathematics are the most disliked subjects in schools. It is our task and challenge as teachers to change this.”

The theme of this season’s competition is “Into Orbit – looking at how to meet the challenges of space travel”. Developing a chemical engineering process for their project; the team showed how to create methane from the Martian atmosphere. This is to be used as rocket fuel to enable rockets to return to Earth or to explore the outer solar system.

The Team’s preparations for the FLL World Championships in Detroit (24-28 April 2019) are in full swing, but we need your help to send them over. Your support is much appreciated!
