ABOUT

Fungi - the soil magicians of the earth, these creatures have long been renowned for their edible, medicinal, spiritual and soil building qualities. Recently popularised for newly discovered applications such as pollution remediation, water filtration, industrial and building materials (packaging, furniture and construction blocks), immunity for bees and much more, join us as we explore these mystical creatures and learn how to cultivate them at home using low tech methods.


We'll be covering:


  • Mushroom basics
  • Liquid innoculation
  • Cardboard spawn
  • Hessian sack spawn
  • Crate / laundry basket cultivation (you get to take home your own 1.5kg mushroom bucket kit)
  • Bucket cultivation
  • Log cultivation, and
  • Mushroom beds


This is a participatory and practical workshop where we'll be implementing all of the above leaving you equipped with everything you need to go home and cultivate your own mushrooms, low tech.


Cost per person is R450.

This workshop will only go ahead if there are 15 confirmed paying participants, so please share with those you feel may benefit. This is to ensure we cover our costs, keep the workshop fee low and make this education accessible. Should we do not reach the 15 humans target, your ticket will be fully refunded. Tickets are non-refundable otherwise.


Confirmation that this workshop will go ahead will be announced on Monday 25 March 2019.


There are reduced cost ticket options for pensioners and low and no income earners. Send us a motivational message to apply. Only a limited number of these tickets available per workshop, so applicants will be vetted.


What to bring:



  • Snacks and a dish to share for a communal lunch. In the spirit of compassionate sharing, please ensure what you bring to share is kosher / halaal / vegetarian
  • Your own dishware and utensils
  • Sun hat - this is an outdoor event
  • Plastic for cardboard spawn (a small lunch box or something similar is fine)
  • Your own seating: camping chair / blanket / yoga mat / pillow
  • An open mind and your inner genius


For those interested there are extra mushroom grow kits (Pink / Grey Oyster) available for order. These are supplied by local growers Culture Mushrooms, and consists of a 2kg mycellium block grown on sawdust and packaged in an easy to handle bag, ready for easy fruiting into mushrooms at your home. Cost price for these are R150. This merchandise option will close by Monday 25 March so we can have it ready for you by the workshop. We also have straw as well as hydrated lime available for sale.

Participants attend this workshop at their own risk. Guerilla House will not be held responsible for any theft, injury, loss or damage which may arise. However, in such an unlikely event we will assist you as best we can.

This event is subject to postponement/cancellation at the discretion of Guerilla House in the event of inclement weather. Tickets will be fully refunded should we postpone/cancel.
