DATE: 11-12 May 2019

Time: 8h30-16h30 both days.

Cost: Students costs are sponsored (Gr10 through to Postgraduate students). Professional rate: R1850 for the 2-day workshop. Includes tuition and tea/coffee. Please BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH.

Venue KZN: BiomimicrySA HQ - Dargle, KZN Midlands

Open to: Students/professionals of any field with an interest in innovation & sustainability. Particularly relevant for fields of Engineering, Design, Business, Life Sciences, Sustainability, Environmental Sciences, Innovation, Entrepreneurs, Business, Software development, Medicine, etc.


DAY1:

Introduction to Biomimicry Thinking and Methodology including Biology to Design & Challenge to Biology.

DAY 2:

Introduction to Biomimicry Life’s Principles and then Setting you up for the Design Challenge process for the rest of the year.


What will the workshop include?




  • An introduction to biomimicry – the WHY, WHAT & HOW of biomimicry (basic practice to build on over time
  • Case studies illustrating how biomimicry could transform our world 
  • The basic tools and skills of biomimicry thinking and practice 
  • Exercises and activities to practice some core components of the biomimicry methodology
  • An overview of local projects illustrating biomimicry in practice
  • An introduction to biomimicry Life’s Principles- the repeated principles and strategies found in all organisms and ecosystems that can be applied to innovation, sustainability & resilience. Truly transformative.
  • An opportunity to begin to work on a real-world design challenge in the Water Sector in South Africa. This project will continue until October, where winning entries will be selected. The finalists will receive further support to explore how their ideas could be taken into implementation.

  • The KZN workshop will be lead by: Claire Janisch, Biomimicry Professional


Following this introductory workshop we will have a series of online webinars for mentoring as well as check-in workshops from Jun-September 2019 to guide you through biomimicry applied to the design challenge. We have sponsorship from the Water Research Commission for students to complete a Learning Journey this year. This will include Introductory and Life’s principles workshops, as well as mentoring and additional workshops to complete a water-based design challenge. Professionals may also join the program but will not be sponsored. Professionals/students that complete the full process will receive a Biomimicry Practitioner certificate. The program runs from May to October 2019.  We will have final presentations to group of judges from the Water Research Commission and BiomimicrySA in October 2019.
